General surgery
Reliable and high-quality materials for use in general surgery
Evonik has extensive experience and expertise in medical biomaterials, especially bioresorbable polymers and acrylic bone cements. These materials are widely used in general surgery applications, such as clips, meshes, staples, sutures, and bone cement.
Clips, meshes, staples, and sutures are commonly used to close wounds, repair tissues, or support organs during or after surgery.
RESOMER® bioresorbable polymers for clips, meshes, staples, sutures
RESOMER® polymers can be processed into various forms and shapes, such as clips, meshes, staples, or sutures. They can also be tailored to meet specific requirements of different applications. They are ideal for making clips and staples that need to withstand high stress and strain during insertion and removal. This resorbable biomaterial is also suitable for making meshes that need to support soft tissues or organs.
Biocellic® biosynthetic cellulose for meshes
Biocellic® is a biosynthetic cellulose that is produced by a patented bacterial fermentation process. Biocellic® meshes have high tensile strength and elasticity, which allow them to conform to the anatomy of the patient and resist deformation. Biocellic® meshes also have low inflammation and infection rates, which reduce the risk of complications and improve patient comfort. They are gradually resorbed by the body over time, which eliminates the need for removal surgery.
VECOLLAN® recombinant & non-animal derived collagen for meshes and sutures
Evonik's VECOLLAN® biosynthetic collagen platform can be used for various medical applications. Its biocompatible, biodegradable, and bioactive biomaterials are suitable for use in sutures and meshes that can facilitate wound closure and hernia repair. VECOLLAN® sutures can reduce inflammation and scarring, while VECOLLAN® meshes can provide strength and flexibility.
Bone cement is used to fill gaps or fix implants in orthopedic surgery. It can be used to bond an implant to the bone and provides stability and load transfer.
DEGACRYL® acrylic resin for bone cement applications
DEGACRYL® is a self-curing acrylic resin that consists of a powder and a liquid component and has several advantages over conventional bone cements. It has low viscosity and high flowability, which allows for better filling of irregular spaces and less leakage. It also has high biocompatibility and biostability, which minimizes inflammation and infection.
