Biomaterials expanding the possibilities in Tissue Engineering

Evonik is a leading producer of biomaterials for tissue engineering applications, providing outstanding biocompatibility, biodegradability, and bioactivity to engineered tissues.  One of the most promising techniques in regenerative medicine is bioprinting, which allows for the creation of complex tissue structures using living cells and biomaterials. Evonik's RESOMER® polymers, VECOLLAN® biosynthetic collagen platform, and Biocellic® biosynthetic cellulose are all ideal materials for bioprinting, as well as for other tissue engineering applications such as breast implants and soft tissue replacement.

Bioprinting is a technique that uses 3D printing technology to create complex tissue structures from living cells and biomaterials. Bioprinting has the potential to revolutionize the field of regenerative medicine by enabling the fabrication of customized and functional tissues and organs.

RESOMER® bioresorbable polymers for bioprinting

RESOMER® resorbable polymers can be used in conjunction with VECOLLAN® in bioprinting.

VECOLLAN® recombinant & non-animal derived collagen for bioprinting

Evonik has developed VECOLLAN®, an advanced recombinant collagen platform that is made via fermentation-based processes and devoid of animal- or human-derived materials. The VECOLLAN® platform can be used in applications to enhance the biocompatibility and bioactivity of the printed tissues. These materials can mimic the natural structure and function of tissues.

Breast implants are medical devices that are used to augment or reconstruct the shape and size of the breast.

RESOMER® bioresorbable polymers for breast implants

Evonik offers RESOMER® polymers as an alternative material for breast implants. They are biocompatible, which means they have a low risk of causing inflammation, infection, or capsular contracture.

Biocellic® biosynthetic cellulose for breast implant applications

Biocellic® has been proven to support cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, as well as tissue regeneration and healing. This biomaterial can be used as a scaffold for breast implants, where it can provide a natural and soft feel, as well as stimulate the growth of the patient’s own tissue.

VECOLLAN® recombinant & non-animal derived collagen for breast implant applications

VECOLLAN® is designed to mimic many of the attributes of natural collagen so that it can reliably interact with cells and tissues and be readily absorbed or remodeled by the body. Evonik offers the VECOLLAN® platform to create breast implants that can mimic the natural structure and function of the tissues. VECOLLAN® implants can offer a safe and natural alternative to silicone.

Soft tissue replacement aims to restore the function and appearance of damaged or missing soft tissues, such as skin, fat, muscle, tendon, ligament, cartilage, or nerve. Soft tissue replacement can be performed for various reasons, such as trauma, disease, congenital defects, or cosmetic enhancement.

VECOLLAN® recombinant & non-animal derived collagen for soft tissue replacement

Evonik offers the biosynthetic collagen VECOLLAN® platform for soft tissue replacement applications. VECOLLAN® biosynhetic collagen can be used as a scaffold, a filler, a gel, or a membrane that can support the growth and differentiation of various cell types. This material can also be modified to incorporate growth factors, peptides, or drugs that can stimulate tissue regeneration and healing.

Evonik’s products can be used in other customized tissue engineering applications. For instance, our RESOMER polymers can be used for cartilage repair purposes, while the biosynthetic collagen VECOLLAN® platform can be used in blood vessel replacement applications.

With our expertise in biomaterials and commitment to innovation, Evonik is transforming the tissue engineering market by improving medical device safety, biocompatibility, and performance. The company's dedication to innovation and technical expertise guarantees that it will continue to offer state-of-the-art solutions for tissue engineering applications. Evonik’s materials can also fill unmet needs in other areas relevant for the tissue engineering therapeutic area, such as hollow organ regeneration and airway reconstruction.

As a leading designer for polymer-based biomaterials with a broad portfolio of products, technologies and services, Evonik has served to many of the world’s largest and most innovative medical device companies for more than 30 years.Rooted in science, driven by continuous innovation, and relentlessly committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we empower our customers to accelerate time-to-market for new medical technologies that create life beyond limits.
