Materials for orthopedic applications

Biocompatible materials for temporary and permanent implant applications in orthopedics

At Evonik, we are a global innovation hub for biomaterials working with our customers to take their ideas from concept to market for more than 30 years. We offer global medical technology companies the industry's most comprehensive portfolio of biocompatible materials for temporary and permanent implant applications in orthopedics.

The growing demand for higher performance materials in orthopedic applications has opened the door for Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) in next generation products. Due to its bone-like mechanical properties and X-ray transparency, PEEK is the material of choice in many spinal implant applications, as well as sports medicine. Its transparency is an advantage for doctors and patients, by using imaging methods for more accurate implant placement, and monitoring of the healing process. RESOMER® biomaterials, meanwhile, offer a resolvable, biodegradable option suitable for applications such as scaffolds for new bone formation.

Our biomaterials are used in the treatment of extremity injuries and disorders. We provide innovative solutions for bone fixation, such as plates, screws, and nails, which are made from high-performance polymers like VESTAKEEP®. These materials offer excellent mechanical strength and biocompatibility, ensuring optimal healing and long-term stability.

VESTAKEEP® PEEK polyether ether ketone molding materials for extremities

VESTAKEEP® i-Grades are Evonik’s biomaterials for permanent implants. They are biocompatible, have excellent mechanical properties and are extremely reliable. The extra high purity and extensive quality measures make VESTAKEEP® i-Grades an ideal material for long-term human implants.

DEGAPLAST® acrylic based resins for extremities

Evonik offers DEGAPLAST® resins, formulations based on methyl methacrylate (MMA), solved polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and special modifiers. DEGAPLAST®-based lamination systems, made with plastics, are used in handcrafting prosthetics. These resins are strong, lightweight, dimensionally stable, and easy to maintain, making them suitable for prosthetics.

We offer advanced biomaterials for prosthetic liners and damping elements. Our products, including DEGACRYL®, provide exceptional cushioning and comfort for amputees. These materials are designed to reduce pressure points, absorb shock, and enhance overall prosthetic performance.

DEGACRYL® polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resins for prosthetic liners and damping elements

DEGACRYL® raw materials are tailor made with well-defined properties in relation to particle size, molar mass and viscosity. DEGACRYL® provides a secure anchor for the prosthetic device and an elastic zone, reducing stress on the new implant to bone interface.

Our biomaterials play a crucial role in the development of podiatric orthoses. We offer materials like DEGACRYL®, which are used to create custom-made insoles and orthotic devices. These materials provide excellent support, shock absorption, and pressure distribution, helping individuals with foot conditions achieve optimal comfort and mobility.

VESTAKEEP® PEEK is the material of choice in many spinal implant applications. DEGACRYL® products are also suitable as raw materials for vertebral augmentation procedures.

Because of its bone-like mechanical properties and X-ray transparency, VESTAKEEP® PEEK is the material of choice in many spinal implant applications. Its transparency is an advantage for doctors and patients, by using imaging methods for more accurate implant placement, and monitoring of the healing process.

Traditionally, metals have been used in spinal cages and other implants in the human body, but over time Evonik’s VESTAKEEP® PEEK has proven a serious and even more desirable alternative which have many advantages over metal, such as avoidance of stress shielding effect, x-ray opacity and high wear comfort. VESTAKEEP® i-Grades and VESTAKEEP® Fusion have been created to fill these needs.

DEGACRYL® polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resins for spinal applications

DEGACRYL® products are acrylic based resins for the manufacturing of composites - necessary for interlinking prosthetics to the human body. DEGACRYL® raw materials are tailor made with well-defined properties in relation to particle size, molar mass and viscosity. Beside cementation of prostheses, DEGACRYL® products are also suitable as raw materials for vertebral augmentation procedures.

VESTAKEEP® PEEK and RESOMER® biomaterials are used in next generation sports medicine applications. Find out more here.

VESTAKEEP® PEEK polyether ether ketone molding materials for sports medicine

Our biomaterials have applications in sports medicine, particularly in the treatment of sports-related injuries. We offer innovative solutions for ligament repair and reconstruction using materials like VESTAKEEP®. These materials provide excellent tensile strength and flexibility, enabling athletes to regain their full range of motion and return to their respective sports.

RESOMER® bioresorbable polymers for sports medicine

Evonik's RESOMER® portfolio of biodegradable polymers can be used in sports medicine applications, notably as a material for screws. RESOMER® is biocompatible, safe, and stable after sterilization, providing a robust solution for sports medicine applications. Crucially, the material offers a wide range of degradation profiles and tailorable mechanical properties, making it an ideal material for customizing screws to meet specific patient needs and reducing the need for follow-up procedures.

Our biomaterials are extensively used in trauma surgery to facilitate bone healing and restoration. We provide bioresorbable polymers like RESOMER®, which act as scaffolds for new bone formation. These materials gradually degrade over time, allowing natural bone regeneration while providing initial mechanical support.

RESOMER® bioresorbable polymers for trauma surgery applications

Evonik offers RESOMER® biomaterials for trauma surgery applications, such as screws, plates, pins, rods, and nails that can fix open fractures and other bone injuries. These biomaterials are based on bioresorbable polymers that can degrade in the body over time and do not require a second surgery for removal.

These biomaterials can reduce the risk of infection, inflammation, and stress shielding that may occur with metal implants. They can promote bone healing and regeneration by providing mechanical stability and osteoconductivity. They can be also be tailored to match the desired degradation rate, mechanical strength, and shape of the implant.

The implantable medical devices used across various orthopedic applications continue to become more specialized and personalized. One key enabling factor driving this market evolution is the development of smart biomaterials that can optimize the medical device safety, biocompatibility and performance. Evonik’s biomaterials for orthopedics applications offer high-quality customized solutions. The company's dedication to innovation and technical expertise guarantees that it will continue to offer state-of-the-art solutions for applications in this industry, filling unmet needs.

As a leading designer for polymer-based biomaterials with a broad portfolio of products, technologies and services, Evonik has served to many of the world’s largest and most innovative medical device companies for more than 30 years. Rooted in science, driven by continuous innovation, and relentlessly committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we empower our customers to accelerate time-to-market for new medical technologies that create life beyond limits.
