Innovative Biomaterial Solutions for Medical Aesthetics
At Evonik, we offer innovative and tailor-made biomaterials for medical aesthetics. Our expertise in biomaterials has allowed us to develop innovative solutions for dermal fillers, barbed sutures, and skin adhesives.
Evolving Consumer Demands in the Aesthetic Dermatology Industry
Nowhere else are consumer demands changing as quickly as in the aesthetic industry. After the market launch of the first hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler in 2003, the material has consistently increased in use and popularity. Following this development, consumer demands are now moving more and more towards biostimulating materials that enhance the body's own collagen production and produce natural results. Nowadays, fillers have to do more than just fill.
Biostimulating Materials for Natural Results
The aesthetic industry is seeing a shift towards biostimulating substances that enhance the body's own collagen production and create a natural-looking result. Although hyaluronic acid has been increasingly used, more is expected of fillers. As a result, dermal filler manufacturers are increasingly turning to bioresorbable polymers such as Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), polycaprolactone (PCL), and polydioxanone (PDO) to create next-generation fillers that meet evolving market needs.
Evonik supports dermal filler manufacturers in producing next-generation fillers that have biostimulating properties and can meet consumer demands.
RESOMER® bioresorbable polymers for dermal fillers
Evonik’s RESOMER® portfolio of highly pure bioresorbable polymers, such as Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), polycaprolactone (PCL) and polydioxanone (PDO), is becoming increasingly popular in fillers due to their high biocompatibility and excellent biorevitalizing performance.
PLA-based materials have a scientifically proven impact on the activity of fibroblasts in the extracellular matrix to produce collagen type I and collagen type III, which improves both skin firmness and skin elasticity. The polymer leads to an increased production of collagen through a controlled inflammatory reaction.
RESOMER®, with over 30 years of efficacy, safety, and supply security, is a reliable choice for filler manufacturers. To help filler makers further differentiate, Evonik has developed a solvent-free micronization technology to enable powders with customized particle sizes, manufactured under ISO 13485 and GMP standards. The new technology is especially suitable for high molecular weight polymers used in filler applications.
With state-of-the-art labs and cGMP (ISO Class 8) facilities, Evonik is a trusted partner to pharma and medical device customers with a strong track record in application and formulation support.
Whether it’s filler or skinbooster, RESOMER® can enhance the body’s own collagen, helping manufacturers to formulate innovative products to meet market needs.
Barbed sutures are a type of knotless surgical suture that have barbs on their surface. These barbs penetrate the tissue and lock them in place, eliminating the need for knots. Barbed sutures are ideal for facial rejuvenation, lifting and contouring procedures, as they provide a secure and uniform closure of the wound, reduce the risk of infection and scarring, and enhance the aesthetic outcome. Evonik offers customized polymers for this application.
POLYMER VS series for barbed sutures
Our POLYMER VS series are addition curing silicones that can be used to manufacture barbed sutures. These silicones offer excellent mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, elongation and tear resistance. They also have a low coefficient of friction, which facilitates the insertion and removal of the sutures. Moreover, they are biostable and resistant to degradation by body fluids and enzymes.
RESOMER® bioresorbable polymers for barbed sutures
RESOMER® biomaterials are used in the production of barbed sutures, providing a bioresorbable option that aligns with the body's natural healing process. These sutures are designed to be absorbed by the body over a specific period, matching the target healing time for various medical applications. RESOMER® offers highly versatile mechanical properties, allowing it to meet the specific requirements of different uses, ensuring both durability and biocompatibility in medical procedures.
Skin adhesives are substances that are used to close wounds or incisions on the skin without using stitches or staples. Skin adhesives can reduce bleeding, pain and infection risk, as well as improve cosmetic outcomes. Skin adhesives can also be used to attach dressings or devices to the skin.
POLYMER VS SERIES for SKIN ADHESIVES
POLYMER VS SERIES silicones can be used as skin adhesives. They have good flexibility and elasticity that allow them to conform to the shape of the wound or device, as well as low toxicity and irritation potential that minimize adverse reactions.
As a leading designer for polymer-based biomaterials with a broad portfolio of products, technologies and services, Evonik has served many of the world’s largest and most innovative medical device companies for more than 30 years.
